Virginity

2005

Installation

Gallerie 1, Cite des Art, Paris

Photographer

Amir Mobed

Red apples, being sprayed with layer of white color, are used along with real woman’s hair. The apples are arranged in two divided spaces: First a row of intact apples with plaited hair, and second, a square of cut apples with messed up hair. This installation is referring to the girls who turn to prostitution under the pressure of poverty, all over the world, especially in Iran, where the government severely denies their existence.

The First Show, held in Arya Gallery, Tehran, was banned over the opening night. First, anonymous telephone calls threatened the gallery owner. Then the representative of the ministry of Islamic Culture and Guidance came to the exhibition and asked Mobed to eliminate some parts of the installation, especially the bloody tissues. Mobed didn’t accept and he was forced to remove the whole exhibition. So the second exhibition was held again, in a new arrangement, in the gallery of Cité des Arts, Paris
